- Qingdao Haidelong Biotechnology: US$5.70/kg, MOQ 1 kg (grade not stamped on that line).

- Hebei Enge Biotech, "Ortho-Ortho 2.5 to 5.4": US$2.00-5.00/kg — SAME SELLER, so the $2.00 end is the 2.5 grade and the $5.00 end is the 5.4 grade.
- Choice Chemicals (Changsha) headlines "Ortho-Ortho 4.8/3.6/3.0/1.8" at US$1,000-2,000/tonne, MOQ 1 t, yet quotes samples at US$50/kg. Their $1,000/t "from" price is the 1.8, not the 4.8. This is the exact listing that produced the USD 2,000-5,000/t band the working assumption was built on.
THE DELTA — THE ANSWER THE BUYER ACTUALLY NEEDS:
Read within a single seller's own band, which is the only honest comparison:
- Hebei Enge: o,o 2.5 -> 5.4 moves US$2.00 -> US$5.00/kg. Delta +US$3.00/kg (2.5x).
- Yichang Shenfa: o,o ~1.8-2.5 -> 4.8 moves US$3.00 -> US$5.40/kg. Delta +US$2.40/kg (1.8x).
- Cross-seller, grade-stamped: 3.0 at US$3.30 vs 4.8 at US$5.38-5.54. Delta +US$2.10-2.25/kg.
Working rule to hand the buyer: roughly US$0.85-1.00 per kg for every 1.0 point of absolute o,o. Therefore:
4.8 vs 3.6 -> +US$1.20-1.70/kg (a 3.6 sits around US$3.80-4.20/kg)
4.8 vs 3.0 -> +US$2.10-2.25/kg
4.8 vs 1.8 -> +US$2.80-3.50/kg
BOTTOM LINE: the USD 5/kg working anchor for genuine 4.8 o,o is CORRECT and now evidenced. Genuine 4.8 does not exist FOB China below about US$4.50/kg at pallet scale in 2026. Any incoming quote at US$2-3/kg for "EDDHA Fe 6%" is a 1.2-2.5 o,o product wearing a 6% label — no exceptions, no "factory direct" story explains it.
SECOND FINDING, EQUALLY IMPORTANT: VOLUME BARELY MOVES THE PRICE. Sichuan Shihong goes US$5.54 (100 kg) -> US$5.38 (5,000 kg), a 2.9% discount for a 50x volume jump. Gro Plus's small first order costs it almost nothing per kg versus a container buyer. Do not accept "you need a tonne to get a real price" — that is a negotiating line, not a cost structure. Quote ladder to plan on: 25 kg ~US$5.00-5.70/kg; 100 kg ~US$5.38-5.54; 500 kg ~US$5.38-5.54; 1 t ~US$5.38.
EUROPEAN BENCHMARK: Van Iperen publishes no price for Oligo Premium Iron-EDDHA 6% (4.8% o-o) and nor does its distributor Azelis; Mertens (NL) lists the equivalent Valagro Ferrilene 6% Fe-EDDHA 4.8% o-o in 5 kg bags but hides prices behind a trade login. The only PUBLISHED EU price ladder for a stated 4.8 o-o product is the Spanish webshop quelatodehierro.com (taxes included): 5 kg bag EUR 43.55 (EUR 8.71/kg); 200 kg pallet EUR 1,628 (8.14/kg); 300 kg EUR 2,422.20 (8.07/kg); 500 kg EUR 4,000.70 (8.00/kg); 700 kg EUR 5,505.50 (7.87/kg); 2,000 kg EUR 15,298.80 (7.65/kg); 5,000 kg EUR 37,895 (7.58/kg), currently discounted to EUR 34,450 (6.89/kg); 10,000 kg EUR 7.50/kg; a 10 kg bucket at EUR 9.47/kg. Their 4.2% o-o products (AYRON, AGRARES Fe PLUS 42) sit at EUR 8.80/kg in 5 kg — i.e. HIGHER than their own 4.8 at EUR 8.71/kg. Conclusion: at EU RETAIL the 4.2-vs-4.8 delta is zero or negative. The isomer delta lives entirely upstream at factory level. Do not try to justify a retail premium in Male on the o,o number alone; justify it on the product actually working on coral sand.
INDIAN BENCHMARK: Ceres Organics Pvt Ltd (Vasai, Maharashtra) INR 320/kg for EDDHA Fe 6% 25 kg (IndiaMART listing dated 6 May 2024) - o,o NOT stated. At ~INR 88/USD that is ~US$3.65/kg, which on the ladder above is a 3.0-3.6 o,o product, not a 4.8. Other IndiaMART/TradeIndia lines: INR 200/kg (Mapco, Noida, 1 kg, claims ">4.8% o,o" - implausible at that price), INR 280-330.40/kg (TradeIndia, "ortho-ortho"), INR 350/kg (Nashik), INR 400/kg (Mumbai, 25 kg), INR 700/kg (Plixo), INR 1,850/kg (MicroFert branded box). Same 9x spread under one "6%" label as China. India is NOT a cheaper lane for genuine 4.8; its advantage is only SAFTA/freight, and o,o is almost never declared.
HS CODE WARNING: one Alibaba listing declares Fe-EDDHA under HS 2921.21.90 (that is ethylenediamine, an organic chemical). Fe-EDDHA as a finished fertilising product normally sits at 3824.99 or 3105.90. The brief's 0% duty applies to HS31. Get Maldives Customs to confirm the classification line IN WRITING before the PO, and instruct the supplier to declare it that way — a HS29/HS38 declaration is a re-classification argument waiting to happen at Male.
=== TASK B: INDEPENDENT VERIFICATION — WHAT ACTUALLY EXISTS ===
Hard finding: no laboratory anywhere in the region publishes a price list for EN 13368-2. Every price below has to be obtained by email; anyone claiming otherwise is guessing.
BEST CANDIDATE: Fitosoil Laboratorios S.L. (Cotecna Group), San Ginés, Murcia, Spain. ISO 17025 accredited private agri lab. On 2 Apr 2026 they published a technical note specifically on "Determination of chelated iron (chelating agents) in fertilizers - physicochemical approach using HPLC-UV", naming ion-pair chromatography, EDDHA/EDDHMA/HBED, isomer resolution ("Isomer Resolution: Very relevant (EDDHA)") and ortho-ortho as "the more stable and effective form". RULED OUT (evidence, not assumption): Industrial Technology Institute (ITI), Colombo. SLAB-accredited for "Fertilizer and fertilizer products" (registry TL 004-01, +94 11 2689157), but its published soil & fertilizer scope is AOAC / ISO / SLS / BS EN wet chemistry for N-P-K, moisture, CEC, particle size etc. across DAP, TSP, rock phosphate, dolomite, urea, kieserite, MOP, ammonium sulphate, zinc sulphate, Epsom, compost and coir. No chromatography, no chelates anywhere in the list. Send one email (dir_cml@iti.lk / info@iti.lk, +94 11 237 9800) but plan on a no.
MALDIVES: no domestic option. MFDA operates the National Health Laboratory (water, food, microbiology). No fertilizer chromatography capability found.
INDIA: no published evidence of any NABL lab offering EN 13368-2 or an o,o isomer determination. India's own Fertiliser Control Order method for chelated iron is written for Fe-EDTA (chelation percentage), not for EDDHA isomers, so the demand simply is not there. Treat India as a long shot; ask SGS India and Intertek Mumbai, do not build the plan on it.
SGS / INTERTEK / BUREAU VERITAS / EUROFINS: no branch anywhere publishes EN 13368-2 in its scope. SGS's own fertilizer page says testing is to AFPC / AOAC / TFI protocols "and a wider range of accreditations, including ISO and CEN" — CEN is the family EN 13368-2 belongs to, so the group can almost certainly do it, but it will be routed to a European lab. SGS Lanka is the nearest desk to walk into: 3rd Floor AEC Building, 140 Vauxhall Street, Colombo 02, +94 11 537 6280.
THE ROUTE THAT ACTUALLY WORKS FOR A FIRST ORDER — TEST AT ORIGIN, NOT AT DESTINATION:
1. Commission a pre-shipment inspection in China with SEALED SAMPLING drawn by the inspector from the packed lot (not a sample the supplier hands over). Published 2026 rates: US$149-320 per man-day for the mid-tier agencies; SGS US$300-600 per man-day. Analysis is billed on top.
2. Inspector couriers the sealed sample to the lab that runs EN 13368-2 (Fitosoil, or whichever SGS/BV European lab the agency nominates).
3. Report is issued to Gro Plus, not to the supplier.
A supplier-selected sample is worth very little; a lot-drawn sealed sample is the whole point. This also removes the Maldives import/export leg of the sample entirely.
SAMPLE SHIPPING: Fe-EDDHA (sodium ferric EDDHA, CAS 16455-61-1) is NOT a dangerous good. Multiple published SDS - including one written for an "EDDHA-Fe Ortho/Ortho 4.8%" product, and an Israeli import MSDS for a 15.48 MT shipment of EDDHA Fe 4.4 - state it is not classified as hazardous under the EEC dangerous substances/preparations directives, no GHS classification, no transport class. So 100-500 g moves by DHL/FedEx as ordinary general cargo. Paperwork: proforma or commercial invoice carrying a low but REAL declared value plus the wording "commercial sample - for laboratory analysis only, not for resale" (a zero-value declaration gets the parcel held), the SDS, and the HS code. No phytosanitary certificate is needed - it is a synthetic chemical, not plant material or soil (soil samples DO need phyto; this does not). The friction that does exist is at the receiving end if the destination country regulates fertilizer imports (Sri Lanka requires National Fertilizer Secretariat registration; India applies the FCO), which is a further reason to send the sample to an EU lab rather than a South Asian one. Maldives export formalities for a small non-hazardous chemical sample were not verified - assume a normal export declaration and confirm with a Male clearing agent.
=== TASK C: HOW TO RECOGNISE A FAKE EN 13368-2 REPORT ON SIGHT ===
(Everything below is read directly out of the standard text - EN 13368-2:2007, superseded by BS EN 13368-2:2017, CEN/TC 260. Cite the 2017 edition on the request form.)
A COMPLIANT REPORT MUST SHOW:
1. Method reference: EN 13368-2 (with edition year), plus EN 1482-2 for sample preparation. Scope note: the method is valid only for a chelated-metal mass fraction of at least 0.625%, and it does NOT measure the free chelating agent.
2. Sample identity: unambiguous sample ID, the supplier's LOT number, dates received and analysed, and the mass weighed. The method weighs 200 mg of the chelate to the nearest 0.1 mg into 200 ml of water, stirs 1 h, makes up to 250 ml.
3. Chromatographic conditions, all six of them: isocratic ion-pair HPLC; C18 reversed-phase column, 3.9 mm internal diameter x 150 mm long, 5 um particle (guard column recommended); eluent = 20 ml of 40% tetrabutylammonium hydroxide in ~600 ml water, adjusted to pH 6.0 with HCl, plus 300 ml acetonitrile, made to 1 litre, filtered through 0.2 um and degassed; flow rate 1.5 ml/min; 20 ul injection loop; UV/Vis detection at 280 nm. A report that says "by HPLC" and names none of these is not an EN 13368-2 report.
4. THE CHROMATOGRAM ITSELF, with peaks labelled. There must be TWO o,o peaks, not one: dl-racemic Fe-o,o-EDDHA and meso Fe-o,o-EDDHA, each with its retention time and peak area. The standard reference solution is 50% meso / 50% dl-racemic and the o,o result is the SUM of the two.
5. THE SINGLE BEST FORGERY TELL: the standard prints two figures side by side - Figure 1, a chromatogram of a pure 25 mg Fe/l STANDARD SOLUTION (two peaks only), and Figure 2, a chromatogram of a real COMMERCIAL Fe-o,o-EDDHA PRODUCT, which shows FOUR labelled peaks: dl-racemic, meso, the ortho-hydroxy/para-hydroxy (o,p) isomer, and the para-hydroxy/para-hydroxy (p,p) by-product. A genuine commercial sample ALWAYS carries visible o,p and p,p peaks - that is precisely the dead weight being paid for. A "product" chromatogram showing two clean peaks and a flat baseline is a standard-solution trace passed off as a sample, or a drawing.
6. Calibration evidence: six calibration solutions at 2.5, 5.0, 10.0, 15.0, 20.0 and 25.0 mg Fe/l per isomer, prepared from a lab-made Fe-o,o-EDDHA standard at 100 mg Fe/l, and TWO calibration curves (racemic and meso separately) with correlation coefficients. Note the standard is prepared in-lab from ethylene diamine di(o-hydroxy phenyl)acetic acid + ferric nitrate, stands overnight in darkness, and keeps one year - a lab that cannot describe its standard is not running the method.
7. Result stated as % Fe chelated by o,o-EDDHA as a mass fraction OF THE PRODUCT (the "4.8" number), not only as a relative % of chelated iron (the "80%" number). Insist on both, plus a separate total-Fe determination, since EN 13368-2 does not measure total Fe. Without total Fe the relative figure is unanchored.
8. Deviations from the method, the accredited lab's name, accreditation body and number, report number, analyst and signature.
RED FLAGS THAT CONDEMN A DOCUMENT:
- Identical peak areas, retention times or result figures across two different lot numbers = copied, not measured. This is the check the buyer already suspected and it is the right one.
- The result reading exactly "4.80%" on every lot. Real analysis scatters.
- Only one peak reported as "o,o-EDDHA".
- No chromatogram at all, just a numbers table.
- A commercial-sample chromatogram with no o,p or p,p peaks.
- Only the relative figure ("o,o >= 80%") with no absolute mass fraction and no sample mass or dilution.
- Method cited as "EN 13368" without the -2, or as "ISO 13368" (does not exist).
- An accreditation logo with no accreditation number and no scope reference.
- Anything on SUPPLIER letterhead. A COA is a supplier claim; a test report is a lab's own document with its own report number. Demand the lab report and verify the number directly with the lab - SGS, Bureau Veritas and Intertek all run online report-verification portals.
WHAT TO WRITE ON THE LAB REQUEST FORM, VERBATIM:
"EN 13368-2:2017 - Fertilizers - Determination of chelating agents in fertilizers by chromatography - Part 2: Determination of Fe chelated by o,o-EDDHA and o,o-EDDHMA by ion pair chromatography. Report: retention times and peak areas for dl-racemic and meso Fe-o,o-EDDHA separately and summed; result as % Fe chelated by o,o-EDDHA on product mass; include the chromatogram. Additionally determine total Fe." Send 100-200 g minimum (the method needs 200 mg per determination, but sub-sampling, grinding to <1 mm per EN 1482-2, and a retained duplicate need more); 500 g is safer and still non-DG.
